As reported recently of robbery/kidnap in JB on Singapore cars.

http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sgseen/this_urban_jungle/1190096/another_sporean_attacked_in_jb_this_time_hero.html

Please be warned that had already happened before. My friend's Honda Accord was also robbed at knife point 2 years ago!

Some reminders:
1) Stay alert!
2) always lock your car doors, don't open the door to strangers
3) avoid going at night if alone
4) avoid secluded area, as it gives robbers opportunity to target u!
5) don't wear too nice or expensive watches or jewellery
6) avoid driving too flashy cars, else kena target again!
7) don't park at quiet or dark areas. If need to pay for carpark, i m sure a little $ won't hurt your pocket!
8) remember to lock your car if leave unattended. Even if pumping petrol!
9) Lock your toilet door if using petrol kiosk toilet or anywhere public
10) if kena trailed by stranger car, drive to the nearest toll station or police station. Do not stop your car!

Cheong with care and hopefully all can enjoy JB! :)

Comparing to all many other south east asian countries, JB is in fact safer. Then again, comparing places only treat the symptoms. The actual cause is this:

It's NOT the place that's dangerous...
It's your personal habits that put you at risk!

Malaysians still insecure despite drop in crime statistics

KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 — The authorities have insisted that the country’s crime rate is on the decline but with the recent spate of kidnap attempts and robberies, many Malaysians are now beginning to feel the streets are not as safe as the statistics claim.

Reports of the kidnapping of 12-year-old Dutch schoolboy Nayati Moodliar, followed by the harrowing tale of a young woman who escaped two kidnappers in a shopping mall, another attempted rape and kidnap at Ampang’s Tesco last week and the recent assault on Bersih activist Wong Chin Huat have raised alarms over the current state of public security.

Following the reports, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak recently admitted that the government needed to do more to combat crime.

It is not easy "to blend into the locals" .... I can spot a S'porean a mile away from their body language, the way they talk, walk and behave, etc

Try and"blend into the locals" when you are in China ... the Chinese people there will easily spot that you are not from PRC

Another Singaporean robbed and hurt in JB

AsiaOne
Monday, Jul 09, 2012

Another Singaporean became the victim of a robbery in Johor Baru on Thursday night.

The latest incident took place at 10.45pm in Permas Jaya in JB.

The victim, part-time tutor David Lim, 24, told Shin Min Daily News that he had posted an advertisement online to sell his girlfriend's laptop.

An interested buyer had responded to his post and asked to meet him in Johor Bahru.

Three men met Mr Lim and his girlfriend in Johor Bahru, and they examined the laptop.

Mr Lim said: "After talking with the three men for a while, they claimed that they didn't have enough money and wanted us to accompany them to the ATM to withdraw cash."

After Mr Lim agreed and returned to his car, he realised that two of the men had followed them and sat in the back seat. Another man drove the other car.

Along the journey, one of the men suddenly pulled out a knife and placed it against Mr Lim's neck and ordered him to drive to Permas Jaya.

Mr Lim added: "When we were about to arrive there, I had a feeling that they wouldn't let us go so easily.

"So when I was driving past some private houses, I deliberately crashed into the gatepost of one of the houses.

"Then I jumped into the back seat and tussled with them."

Several residents in the area initially tried to help Mr Lim, but after the men told them they were the ones being robbed, the residents freed them.

The three men fled the scene.

Mr Lim sustained a 4cm-long knife wound and injuries to his hands and legs.

His girlfriend needed three stitches on her face and mouth.

Enjoy high life for low price in Johor Bahru

Despite news of Singaporeans being victims of crime in Johor, more are snapping up houses for less than half of what they would cost here.

More Singaporeans have weekend homes in Iskandar, Johor

By Kimberly Spykerman & Teh Joo Lin

AFTER a leisurely lunch on his patio, Mr Zulkifli Mansor can walk out to a putting green and practise a few strokes of golf - and he doesn't even have to leave his home.

From his balcony, Mr Tio Hong Tjoen sometimes casts a reel into the stream winding around his home. The Singapore permanent resident has caught fish weighing up to 3kg.

Mr Zulkifli, a 47-year-old civil servant, and Mr Tio, 53, who is in the furniture business, are among an increasing number of Singaporeans and permanent residents buying high-end homes across the Causeway, mainly as weekend residences.

From his doorstep, Mr Zulkifli can point out eight other properties belonging to Singaporeans in a neighbourhood of about 170 homes.

'In fact, the first group to welcome us to the neighbourhood was Singaporean,' he told The Straits Times. He bought his home about three months ago as a holiday retreat for his wife and son. His mother-in-law and sister-in-law live there permanently. His two-storey house is in a gated estate fronted by burly security guards - a far cry from the days when Singaporean-owned homes in Johor Baru made headlines as prime targets for burglaries.

And with relatively few restrictions on home ownership in Malaysia - the houses have to be at least two-storeys high and until recently had to cost a minimum of just RM250,000 (S$103,000)- Singaporeans are finding it a breeze across the border. The minimum cost has just doubled to RM500,000.

Mr Zulkifli's roomy 2,140 sq ft house sits in a lush garden and cost him RM298,000 - much less than what he would have had to fork out for a three-room HDB flat here.'Every month I pay a $630 instalment on the house which is less than the $800 I pay for my car - and I can't live in my car!' he quips.

Mr Zulkifli's house is on an estate known as Nusa Idaman, one of at least four sprawling housing estates within South Johor's Iskandar Malaysia project, which is being touted as a high-class resort area.

The Iskandar Regional Development Authority, which oversees the development of the 2,217 sq km area, says Singaporeans occupy about four in 10 homes there. Another three in 10 are occupied by other foreigners, mainly expatriates working in Singapore, with the remainder owned by Malaysians.

Iskandar Malaysia was designated as a special economic zone in Johor in 2006. Besides upmarket housing, plans are in the pipeline to build universities, top-notch medical facilities and theme parks.

The residential estates are none too shabby either, and home owners say the construction quality is good.

Homes in the luxurious Horizon Hills are set against a private golf course. Residents in the nearby Leisure Farm Resort have horse-riding facilities, and at Nusa Idaman, there is a kindergarten on the estate.

The fear of being a target of burglars has by and large been put paid to as well, with developers cottoning on to the concerns and touting high-levels security features to reel Singaporeans in.

Back in 2006, 37 Singaporeans launched a petition to the Malaysian High Commission for Singapore, asking for help following a spate of burglaries in a condominium in Bandar Seri Alam in Johor. Their units were completely ransacked and stripped of electrical wiring and light fixtures.

Mr Tio, who bought a weekend home in Leisure Farm Resort, says: 'It's very safe. Security is one of the reasons I bought a unit here.'

The neighbourhoods are fenced in and have several levels of security, such as CCTV monitoring and former Nepalese army guards on 24-hour patrol.

Developers Mulpha International even paid for a manned police station to be built just outside the main entrance of the the Leisure Farm estate.

'We have had a few attempted break-ins in the past 12 years but with no harm, casualties or monetary loss. We are trying our level best to keep our record low and as close to zero as possble,' a spokesman added.

With the promise of better security and property prices soaring at home in the last few years, Singaporeans have been looking northwards, charmed by the prospect of open space and quiet.

Developers say that interest has grown stronger in the past two to three years with the 'aggressive promotion of Iskandar Malaysia'.

There are advertisements in local newspapers, roadshows in hotels and even charter buses to take interested Singaporeans to South Johor - a 15 minute drive from the Second Link - to view the developments.

Mr Zulkifli makes the hour-long drive from his home - a flat in Jurong East - whenever he is on leave and his son is on vacation from school.

Sometimes he goes to the nearby kampung, a 15 minute drive away, for a walk to unwind.

Mr Tio, an Indonesian who is now a Singapore permanent resident, said: 'I come here with friends to eat and drink. In Singapore, where can you unwind?' He lives in a bungalow in the MacPherson area with his two daughters.

But there are drawbacks to living life far from the bustling city. The nearest supermarket is a 10 minute drive away. Many Singaporeans say that they prefer to live and work in Singapore, and have a weekend home to escape to.

Mr Zulkifli's wife, part-time wedding caterer Madam Amidah Ahmad, 47, said: 'Back in Singapore, I step out of my house and there is an NTUC there already.'

And home repairs are not always undertaken speedily.

Said 68-year-old remiser Tan Hui Nam: ' 'The system here is different, the work ethic and culture are different. You have to learn to be more patient.'

Also, while the estates are not far from the Second Link, the cost of driving back and forth can add up, with the tolls on both sides of the Causeway. A round trip can cost almost $20.

'I cannot live here on a full time basis because it's just too expensive to be driving in and out of Malaysia every day!' added Mr Tan.

Singaporean Arif Tan, 62, is shopping around for contractors to have a bungalow built to his specifications in Johor.

The owner of a transport company has made trips up to various showflats in the region and says he hopes to make the move with his wife and three grown children within three to five years.

It is part of his retirement plan, he says, adding: 'The cost of living in Singapore is just too high.'

Property experts say that buyers of property in the Iskandar Malaysia project should see their purchases as long-term investments, as the area is still in its developmental stages and not expected to realise its potential within the next five to 10 years. These properties are better off as holiday homes, they add.

Said PropNex chief executive Mohamed Ismail: 'There will be a continuous supply of more land and property, so new buyers will have a choice between resale homes and new properties. It will take some time for the development to attain maturity and for the resale market to become buoyant.'

Stop the COMPLACENCY: Johor is now known as SIN CITY

First and foremost I would like to congratulate the JB police for having resolved two criminal cases in the city so speedily and the generous coverage they have been granted on local press.

Last Saturday, the Johor police brought in the female Singaporean victim and Singapore media, and announced that the abduction case taking place at a JB gas station had been resolved, and three suspects had been apprehended. The police also said they had recovered the vehicle, mobile phone and laptop belonging to the victim.

Indeed the police should receive a big thumbs-up for taking only three days to resolve the case.

A few days back, the police made another announcement, the robbery involving a businesswoman had also been resolved, and that the suspects had been arrested.

This time, the police took only ONE hour!

Living in fear

But, should the prompt actions from the JB police be translated into total safety of our city? No way! Crime continues to run rampant on a daily basis and fears among local residents and tourists remain very much evident.

Singaporeans continue to think negatively of the security in JB.

The female Singaporean victim confessed that her younger sister, two children and maid, who were in JB with her when the incident occurred, were still living in fear and had to be excused from the media conference hosted by the Johor police.

On the bright side of things, the speedy actions on the part of our police over the two cases at least show that they have put in a lot of effort to resolve the cases and are far from being grossly inefficient as popularly portrayed. That, nevertheless, does not mean their public image could be whitewashed overnight.

Whether they WANT to do a good job

As a matter of fact, the immediate reaction most people would have on this is: "Look, it is not a question of whether they can do it or not, but whether they want to do it at all."

The police need not feel dejected over such unflattering response for the simple reason that this stereotyped image of theirs has been built up progressively over the years and decades.

A friend who has to regularly take plenty of cash with him across the Causeway due to business needs tells me each time he steps out of his JB house, he would be instantly overcome by crippling anxiety which could be instantly relieved the moment he sets his feet on the other side of the Causeway.

I know what the friend has tried to tell me, and I believe our police should get the message, too.

Sin City

Prime minister Najib has said he hopes the police can do better than this, for if they fail, they will bring down with them the way Malaysians view the government.

All that we little fries want from our police is a simple wish not to live in a city known by outsiders as the "Sin City."

When I was joining a tour in South Korea several years back, our guide said jokingly to some female tourists from JB: "You don't have to cling on your handbags so tight. You are now in Seoul, not JB!"

I had wanted to tell him, "You're wrong, man. Seoul is very safe, but JB is safer!"

But I knew couldn't.

How I wished I could do so some day.

Do not put your notebook, ipad, camera, or any equipment with a built-in clock in your car, even inside your boot. It is not safe anymore. Gadgets that detect the clock are now being used widely (easily obtained from the US cheaply) to scan cars, and only those cars that have been identified with notebooks, cameras, etc are broken into.

There were a group of us, 3 cars together, parked at one of the bigger lay-bys in the NS highway, on our way to KL. Only my friend's car was broken into and he lost his camera and notebook. The other 2 cars were intact, and we carried our cameras and notebooks with us when we alighted.

Take care. After all said and done, Malaysia ( and JB) is still a good place to visit and cheong - good value for money. Just be a bit more alert and follow common sense practices.

Huh? Gadget to detect clocks?

Notebooks, cameras, ipads, mobile phones all have a chip (processor) with in-built clock functions running on internal battery. It is this internal battery that is being detected. Unless you are techy enough to disable the internal battery, it would be safer to take your equipments along with you when you leave your car.

Report from The STAR dated 13 July 2012 :-

Johore not a crime haven

JOHOR BARU: Police had detained 135 Singaporeans for drug-related offences in the past three years.

State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said that for the first six months of 2012, 20 Singaporeans were arrested.

“We found that 12 cases involved drug abuse, while six other dealt with possession and two people were nailed for drug trafficking.”

He added that 53 Singaporeans were detained for drug offences last year, while 62 were detained for similar offences in 2010.

Commenting on Singapore citizens as crime victims, DCP Mohd Mokhtar said an average of one Singaporean is a crime victim in the state daily.

“Last year alone, 400 crime cases involving Singaporeans were recorded in the state.

“For the first six months of this year, a total of 216 crime cases were related to Singaporeans.

“Most cases were property crimes such as motorcycle theft and robbery,” he added.

DCP Mohd Mokhtar said some 26 cases of violent crimes were reported from January to June this year.

Of the lot, 17 cases were related to gangrobbery.

He added that some 53 Singaporean criminals were also nabbed in Johor last year.

In relation to the issue, DCP Mohd Mokhtar urged citizens from the island republic not to label Johor as a crime haven and assured them that the police are working hard to fight crime.

“They should not be afraid to come here for their holidays or to conduct business,” he added.

Not all who stay in JB and work in "spore are "Johoreans" ..... many are not Johorean but from other States, eg Malacca, Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Perak, Penang, Perlis, Sarawak and Sabah

Bro KTL, exactly. Most of my malaysian friend who work in spore are from KL, ipoh and penang and not johorean. They just rent a room in JB for a place to stay as they need to get to work in spore every morning. More and more malaysian are renting room in JB becos recently last few years the property price in spore shoot up like crazy, rental of 1 room in spore increase from 400 dollar to 750 dollars on the average, almost double.

Nobody can deny the fact that the high cost of living in JB is caused by sporean spending and some just spoilt the market by overpaying, overtipping or overbuying. They should spare a thought for the people of JB also. Just compare JB with other states or big cities like KL, Ipoh or penang, the cost of living in JB is no doubt the highest.

When alot of money is pump into the economy of JB, the cost of living naturally goes up. Sporean has invested and purchase alot of property in iskandar zone of southwest johor and this will directly affect the property price in the region in the near future.

Same principle apply to mp. When there is a strong demand for massage services, more and more shophouse massage parlour opening up and the price of massage also goes up.

To me, I personally feel comfortable and safe residing in JB and Malaysia. As long as we avoid going to very isolated place like back lanes, dark areas with insufficient lighting, areas with no people around, etc, there shouldn't be any safety problem. :)

Nowadays, landed houses in Malaysia also have gated and guarded surroundings arranged by developers to provide peace of mind for property buyers. There are fencing surrounding the precinct of the landed houses, CCTV cameras installed to oversee the whole boundary of the estate and there are security guardhouse manning the entrance of the estate. Frequent patrolling by the guards are also carried out to ensure the safety of the residents.

Cars and petrol are cheap in Msia and using own transport during late night to a certain extent is also not much of a worry.

Some sporean got robbed is because they may have exposed their valuable, trying to show off that they are rich and may have offended the people in JB. Therefore it is best to avoid wearing jewellerys and keep a low profile at all times. ;)

In fact, every country there's crime even in spore, Just that everyone has to be alert and take necessary precaution not to go to dangerous places, safety should not be an issue.

To me, JB is definitely a safe and wonderful place to stay and I would love to retire in JB as it will be my future home. JB boleh ! :p

S'pore money changers run out of Malaysian ringgit

SINGAPORE - Some money changers in Singapore on Friday ran out of Malaysian ringgit notes after the favourable exchange rate sparked strong interest from buyers taking the chance to stretch their dollar by picking up ringgit on the cheap.

The Singapore dollar is trading at one to 2.51 Malaysian ringgit, after hitting a 14-year high against the Malaysian currency this week.

The ringgit is under pressure as Malaysia's general election looms and as investors exit emerging Asian markets for safer assets.

Sim Moh Siong, a currency strategist at Bank of Singapore, said: "I think part of the under-performance could be due to the drop in commodity prices, especially in terms of crude oil and palm oil. That seems to be an overhang on the ringgit."

Currency analysts said the ringgit could weaken further this year, on risks from Malaysia's upcoming general election.

This could push the Singapore dollar to 2.55 versus the ringgit within the year, before moderating to 2.45 by end-2013.

Saktiandi Supaat, who is head of currency research at Maybank, said: "It's a reflection also of how market participants see Malaysian assets and also the tolerance level of Bank Negara in terms of allowing some flexibility in the ringgit.

"The ringgit has fluctuated or reacted more than the Singapore dollar to Eurozone and global risks such as growth issues. The structural issues on Singapore dollar restrict the way it reacts."

Global economic uncertainty has caused investors to pull money out of riskier assets like emerging-Asia currencies as they opt for safe haven assets like the US dollar.

The Singapore dollar has also been attracting these investors.

It has appreciated 2.5 per cent against the Thai baht and Indonesian rupiah this year.

Lee Chen Hoay, an investment analyst at Phillip Futures, said: "Because of the Eurozone crisis, it has increased the risk aversion in the market. And you even see things like Switzerland and Denmark being able to issue bonds at negative yield.

"So that means investors are willing to pay more money to get less, to protect their capital. And Singapore, being the only Southeast Asian currency with triple A, has an increased appeal."

Analysts said that should the Singapore dollar continue strengthening versus the ringgit, Singapore companies with operations in Malaysia could see profits take a hit.

However, Malaysian companies with operations in Singapore may see currency gains as they repatriate profits.

If JB is not safe and is a "dangerous" why S'poreans send their old parents to stay in "Old Folks Homes" in JB ???

Report from The New Paper dated 11 July 2012 :-

More S'poreans heading to Johor nursing homes

For some Singaporeans, growing old means living across the Causeway - in a nursing home in Johor Baru.

Home operators there say about 10 percent of their clients are now Singaporeans and they are getting more enquiries from Singapore families.

Many moved their seniors or disabled relatives up north, citing more affordable care.

Some, like Mr Tan Ah Song, 70, found a better living environment there.

Yet, others, like 85-year-old Madam Minah and 90-year-old Madam Yee, had no choice.

Just who are these Singaporeans living their twilight years in another land?

What are their stories?

S'porean fought JB crooks with baseball bat

THE carjacking and an attempted robbery of Singaporeans in Johor Baru recently may have raised questions of personal safety across the Causeway.

But a Singaporean took matters into his own hands last Sunday when he took on his aggressors with a baseball bat.

The man, who wanted to be known only as Alex, posted on $$$$$$$$$$$$. com’s online forum that evening that he narrowly escaped after encountering a gang of four men posing as policemen along a road near Stulang Laut.

He wrote that the men, who were riding on two motorcycles, had signalled for him to pull over in his Chevrolet Cruze sedan at about 2.30am, while they stopped at a traffic light junction.

Alex, who was headed back to Singapore via Woodlands Checkpoint, was alone, he told my paper in an interview.

He sensed something amiss but complied anyway, stopping his car by the side of the road.

When he was approached by one of the men, who demanded RM1,000 (S$397) from him, Alex grabbed a baseball bat he kept beside him in his car and hit the man in his face.

Alex then sped off, only to be chased by the two motorcycles at speeds of up to 140kmh for about ten minutes.

He got away after one of the motorcycles ran over a pothole.

The men on the other motorcycle then gave up the chase.

He told my paper that he had encountered Malaysian policemen before and “they rode proper police bikes”, unlike the four men, who rode small-capacity underbone motorcycles.

All four men wore civilian clothes, donning vests emblazoned with the word “Polis” in capital letters as the only identifying markings, said Alex. He did not make a police report as he could not recall the facial features of the men nor the motorcycles’ licence-plate numbers.

A Straits Times report last Saturday said that an average of one Singaporean a day falls victim to crime in Johor.

Alex, who is in his late 20s, has frequented Johor Baru for the past two years and always keeps a baseball bat in his car – just in case.

Lawyers told my paper that Alex’s actions were within his rights of self-defence.

“A person is entitled to reasonable steps to protect himself and his property...he did the best thing that he could in those circumstances,” said lawyer Amolat Singh.

But motorists who frequent Malaysia say that wielding a baseball bat may not be the best option.

Mr Chris Ng, who organises frequent road trips to Malaysia, advises motorists to accede to the demands of would-be robbers and “fight back only when you do not have any leeway to move backwards”.

Travelling in groups and avoiding dodgy areas are also recommended, he said.

“When you travel in a group, your chances of safety are much higher.”

I used to think that JB is safe also until i personally witnessed a snatch theft robbery... Saw a young lady carrying a handbag over her should and as she walked a bike went past her and the pillion grabbed her bag... She didn't release and was dragged for like one meter... Poor girl her leg's flesh all gone and she was lying there crying...

But then again she shouldn't have exposed herself to crime

Singaporeans snap up Malaysian property as ringgit weakens

By Clara Chooi
July 22, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — More Singaporeans are streaming across the Causeway to buy up property in Malaysia, taking advantage of the weakening ringgit which has fallen by 2.7 per cent in the past year to reach a 14-year low against the Singapore dollar.

Singapore’s Straits Times (ST) reported today figures from Malaysia Property Inc — an agency that promotes Malaysia’s real estate abroad — showing that the total transaction value of real estate here had spiked by 28 per cent last year to RM137.8 billion from RM107.4 billion in 2010.

Of the total, the paper said, two per cent were foreign investments.

Noting the trend, local agents have also been increasing efforts to lure Singaporeans into investing in the Malaysian property market through heavy advertising, roadshows and road trips for potential buyers to visit sites.

Citing property agency HSR’s overseas department head Donna Lim, the daily reported that the number of exhibition visits from Singaporeans alone had seen a sharp incline from last year.

Property agent Propnex was cited as saying that Singaporeans had purchased 50 units through them in the second quarter of the year, double the amount purchased in the first quarter.

Leisure Farm Singapore head Peter Lim said Singaporeans had bought 35 units in Johor’s Iskandar region over the past two months, compared to merely a dozen in the first two months of last year.

“The weakening Malaysian ringgit, the lure of owning landed property and familiarity with the country are reasons they (Singaporeans) cite for looking north,” the daily wrote.

But although the capital of Kuala Lumpur continues to have its lure, Singaporean investors are finding better familiarity with Johor and are particularly attracted to the state’s bustling Iskandar region.

Citing Malaysia Property Inc, ST reported that in the first half of 2010 alone, foreigners made up only four per ent of Johor’s property transactions for purchases above RM1 million.

“In the corresponding period last year, however, that figure shot up to 25 per cent,” the paper wrote. “Much of the demand has been generated by the buzz over the Iskandar region, earmarked by the Malaysian government as a major growth area for the country.”

According to Edwin Tan, director of the Paragon Residences @ Straits View Malaysia project in Iskandar, Singaporeans booked 116 units during a roadshow earlier this month while only 54 bookings were made by Malaysians.

Apart from Johor, the ST reported that many Singaporeans have also been venturing further up north in Malaysia to scout for potential investments in Malacca, Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

Hunza Properties senior marketing and sales manager Lily Tan was cited as saying that Singaporeans account for some 15 per cent of the firm’s unit sales in its newest condominium Gurney Paragon in Penang.

The weakening of the ringgit against the Singapore dollar is expected to further stimulate demand. It has fallen by 2.7 per cent in the past year to reach a 14-year low against the Singapore dollar,”

Singapore prison warden stabbed to death at JB pub

The Star/Asia News Network
Monday, Jul 30, 2012

JOHOR BARU - A warden with Singapore's Changi Prison died after he was ambushed and stabbed outside a pub here.

The 43-year-old man, identified only as Ravi, and a friend were attacked when they exited a popular entertainment outlet along Jalan Melodies Merah in Taman Melodies at around 5am on Sunday.

Ravi died after he was stabbed three times by several men who cornered him and his friend M. Gunaseelan, 29.

Gunaseelan, who managed to escape, said they tried to run in different directions upon seeing the men armed with knives coming towards them.

He said two men chased and punched him while the others went after Ravi and stabbed him.

"I threw my wallet with RM700 inside at them and asked them not to hurt me further," said Gunaseelan, who works as a baker in Singapore.

"When I turned to look at Ravi, he was already lifeless," he said.

He added that Ravi, a Singapore permanent resident, left behind a 39-year-old wife and a three-year-old daughter.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Zainuddin Yaacob said the attack was a result of a misunderstanding after the victim brought beverages from outside into the entertainment premises.

He said an argument ensued, which led to a fight outside.

Those with information can call the police hotline at 07-2212 999 or head to the nearest police station

Report from the Straits Times dated 23 august 2012 :-

JB money changer robbed of $1m on the Causeway

A Malaysian money changer on his way to Singapore a few days ago was robbed of more than $1 million in broad daylight, reported China Press on Wednesday.

He had cleared Customs on the Malaysian side at around noon and was then on the Causeway on his motorcycle.

The report said that when he realised he was being tailed by suspicious characters on motorcycles, he sped up towards the Singapore end of the Causeway.

But at least one of the bikers threatened him with a parang. Fearing for his life, he pulled over. He was relieved of the money on him and his motorbike too; the robbers fled back to Malaysia.

think of me as kaypoh:D if you already know

1. walking quickly /quietly when moving from point to point
look around before leaving your car
plan the route you are taking, take note if any persons start walking to catch up

2. park your cars at shopping centres or car park with automatic systems
the car thief will need the ticket to exit car park with your car
places with the plastic tickets are best.. they are more difficult to duplicate than paper tickets

remember the price of paid parking is much lower than the value of your car ..and now COE!!

3. quickly get in and drive off when leaving, don,t waste time sitting in the car
remember... your SG car plate gives you away

happy cheonging...

A few years ago even before the new Malaysian CIQ was in operation they used to be able to scan SGP Licence Plates at passport control and alert the traffic police immediately after Immigration of passing vehicles with outstanding speeding fines. These Malaysian Traffic Polis guys would pull the cars over and make the driver report to a small makeshft office on the left. They would issue the "driver" with a printout of the purported violation. In this case, my friend got pulled up for a speeding violation at Kulai a year ago which was picked up by a speed camera. He denied that he was the driver at that time and they offered to compound it for 50% of the MYR300 fine. He refused to pay and they had to let him go but warned that next time there is no discount on the fine.

If you really do have a summon in Malaysia and have not paid for a long time simply look out for temporary counters that are set up (Tent Like Looking) usually they offer 50% off during their National Day or seasonal periods, take advantage of that and quickly pay for it. Or you can approach any police station to have it settled.

Another case is if you are in and out of Malaysia, there are chances that just before the checkpoint where you are going to exit Malaysia they have counter setup to screen Singapore cars for fine, you will have to settle the fine on the spot not sure if they charge more for this case.

JB City's highways to progress

By Sim Bak heng

IT is not easy to determine how much the completed highway network in Johor Baru, or Iskandar Malaysia in particular, has shortened travelling time and made our life easier until I experienced it recently.

I was able to travel to the Legoland theme park using the coastal highway, and Bandar Penawar by using the Senai-Desaru Expressway (SDE).

The former was for leisure, and the latter, for work.

Frankly, it never crossed my mind that both destinations are much nearer than I thought.

It took my friend just 15 minutes to drive from my office in Bandar Baru Uda to the Legoland theme park in Nusajaya.

Bandar Penawar is about 30 minutes from the SDE exit in Ulu Tiram.

Not only is travelling time shortened, but the highways offer scenic views on both sides, especially at the bridge across Sungai Johor along the SDE.

The best news is that the coastal highway linking to Nusajaya is toll-free, although commuters have to pay for using the SDE.

In the past, going to Bandar Penawar or Desaru was a tedious task because of the long and winding road on undulating terrain, and the presence of slow-moving trailers or lorries.

This is enough to hinder the growth of the tourism industry in Desaru, which has seen stagnated development over the years.

Now, the journey to Desaru is smooth, as there are not too many vehicles using the tolled highway.

With Desaru much nearer now, some developers are planning to pump in money to redevelop Desaru and turn it into the "Bali of Malaysia" by featuring several world-class resorts and hotels.

Desaru is a coastal resort in southeast Johor which is popular among locals and Singaporeans.

The long distance and the increase in fuel cost over the years have taken its toll on the attractiveness of the destination.

With a shorter distance and a smoother journey to reach Desaru now, luck is certainly on its side.

The scenic view and the development along the coastal highway right up to the Legoland theme park is a sight to behold.

The bridge across Sungai Danga along the coastal highway offers a spectacular view of the whole Danga Bay development.

Day or night, the views are equally enchanting.

Both highways are outside the Johor Baru city.

At the city centre, the end of the inner-ring road near Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baru has been upgraded further with flyovers to ensure an even smoother traffic flow.

The Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL), needless to say, is a perfect alternative for those who wish to avoid the many traffic lights and the turtle-paced traffic flow along Jalan Tebrau at peak hours.

As the terminal point of the North-South Highway at Pandan is now linked directly to the EDL which ends at the new Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex in the Sultan Iskandar Building, it takes a much shorter time to reach the CIQ Complex from the highway and vice-versa.

Visitors from other states will surely be amazed by the rate of the highway development in Johor Baru.

Such infrastructure certainly augurs well for investors, tourists and locals alike.

Undeniably, this is one of the biggest accomplishments of Iskandar Malaysia to date.

Report from The STAR (Malaysia) dated 22 September 2012 :-

Automated Enforcement System begins crackdown on law-breaking drivers

PETALING JAYA: The Automated Enforcement System (AES) will begin operations in 14 “blackspots” to catch drivers who break speed limits and jump traffic lights on Saturday.

For the first phase of the AES, 14 cameras were installed at Perak, Selangor, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur, with 10 of the cameras to catch speed limit breakers and four to catch those who jump traffic lights.

More cameras will be installed at 817 blackspots in the second phase, which will see a nationwide implementation of the AES.

Road Transport Department (JPJ) director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan said the implementation of the AES was a serious move by the Government to reduce the number of road fatalities.

“Hence, the AES cameras are installed at “blackspots”, or locations identified as accident-prone areas with high incidence of deaths,” said Solah in a press statement on Saturday.

Solah said the public could check out the locations of the AES cameras on JPJ's website at www.jpj.gov.my, adding that road users would be able to know they were in AES operation zones through signboards.

“By knowing where the AES cameras are located at, road users will be more careful and will drive according to the law. It will reduce the number of deaths and our objectives to ensure the safety of road users will also be met. The public should see the implementation of the AES as a way to educate the road users, not as a means to give JPJ extra power to issue summons,” said Solah.

He said AES camera warning signs for no-speeding areas would be visible two to three kilometres before the cameras.

For cameras that record offences of people who jump traffic lights, the warning signs are located 50 to 500m of the traffic lights.

Solah said images captured by the AES cameras would be sent automatically to the AES control centre and the vehicle registration numbers of the alleged offenders would be cross checked with JPJ's database, before a summons notice was sent to the registered vehicle owner.

“The process of cross checking, identifying the offence and issuance of summon notices is done by trained JPJ officers who are based at the AES control centre. If the captured images do not match with the vehicle registration details on JPJ's database, further investigations will be carried out. This is to ensure that only valid summons according to road laws are issued, as well as to avoid from summons to be issued to innocent parties,” he added.

Summon notices that have been processed and verified will be sent to the registered vehicle owner within five days of the offence date.

The notice will contain information of the vehicle, time of offence and the capture images of the vehicle.

“However, if the registered owner is not the driver of the vehicle at the time of offence, they can submit the drivers details to JPJ after 30 days from receiving the summons notice. If they choose to be present in court, they can do so at the time and date that is specified on the notice,” said Solah.

Solah said those who receive AES summons notice can call the AES Control Centre for further questions at 03-7846 4400 for offences committed in Perak and 03-7628 8268 for offences in Selangor, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur.

Police to make JB streets safer

A TOTAL of 1,580 police officers have been assigned to patrol the streets of Johor Baru city to ensure public safety. Johor police chief Datuk Mokhtar Shariff said statistics showed that 70 per cent of the crimes reported in the state over the past 12 months took place in Johor Baru.

JOHOR BARU: Mokhtar said, however, the crime rate in the state has been decreasing over the past four years.

"In Johor, there are 15 crime hotspots in eight districts, with five locations in Johor Baru," Mokhtar said when he launched the Johor Baru Transformation Programme Open Day.

The event was also attended by Johor State secretary Datuk Abdul Obet Tawil, Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) chief executive Ismail Ibrahim and Johor Baru mayor Burhan Amin.

Mokhtar said the police will always take steps to improve security in keeping with the development in the state.

"Besides increasing patrols, more police beat bases will also be set up.

"Apart from more policemen patrolling the streets on motorcycles, more marine policemen will be assigned to monitor the waterways."

Mokhtar said that Johor police will be getting an additional 150 motorcycles for street patrols and another 900 officers under the Police Volunteer Reserve programme.

Report from The STAR dated 8 December 2012 :-

Burglar-proof licence plates help motorists evade traffic laws

KUALA LUMPUR: People will go to great lengths to break the law, it seems.

Even as the fuss over the Automated Enforcement System (AES) is ongoing, a new gadget is being sold online to help motorists evade traffic laws and avoid being caught on camera.

The Taiwan-made device is billed as a “burglar-proof licence plate” but it might as well be called an “automated escape system” for speed fiends.

It obscures a vehicle’s front and back number plates or either one at the press of a button.

Users are supposed to activate it when they see a warning sign of a speed trap camera.

A black fabric scrolls down to cover the plate, like a simpler version of the revolving number plates on the Aston Martin DB5 used in James Bond’s Goldfinger and Thunderball movies of the 1960s.

The gadget, which costs RM400 and is relatively simple to install in less than hour, has become a hot-selling item with the enforcement of the AES.

It is being marketed via a Facebook account which lists the mobile phone number of agents in the Klang Valley.

There are also dealers in Johor and Pahang.

Motorists can also take the device to auto accessory shops to have them installed for about RM30.

The Star met with one agent in Bandar Sri Damansara who had a number of units in his car’s boot.

The man, in his 40s, explained how to fix the plate cover, wires and the metal frame and how to test it before use.

“Initially, I sold one or two units to close friends via Facebook but now the demand is good due to the AES and I sell about 15 units a day,” he said.

He also offered other law-breaking “advice”, like places where speed traps were located along the North-South Expressway and the Karak Highway.

“If you are going to Johor Baru, cover the front number plate as the speed cameras only capture from the front. If you are heading to Kuantan, Pahang, cover the back number plate as the cameras shoot from the back,” he said.

Selangor Road Transport Department public relations officer Ahmad Awang said covering the number plate was an offence under the Road Transport Act 1987.

“Offenders can be summoned and ordered to remove them. It is an offence if the plates are partially covered and even if the size of the letters or numbers are changed and cannot be seen clearly.

“If caught, offenders will have to remove the gadget and bring the vehicle for inspection within a stipulated time,” he added.

AES cameras to be installed at 100 areas in Johor

JOHOR BARU: Johor Road Transport Department (RTD) will install 100 Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras along roads in the state next month.
Johor RTD director, Johari Yusof, said the cameras would be installed at 100 black spots around Johor Baru north, Kulaijaya and Batu Pahat, before the operation is expanded to the rest of the state.

"Of the 100 cameras, 68 will be located at the hot spots to nab speeding drivers while the remaining will be installed near traffic lights in these districts," he said, hoping that with this implementation of the AES, more motorists would be mindful about speeding.

"The system will help to educate road users on safety. At the same time, footage from the system could be used in the court as evidence on offences committed."

Singapore to remain Malaysia's most important source of foreign tourist arrival

SINGAPORE: Tourism Malaysia expects Singapore to remain the most important source of foreign tourist arrivals in Malaysia, registering more than 50 per cent of total arrivals annually.

Its director for Singapore, Zalizam Zakaria, said more Singaporeans were expected to visit Malaysia in the coming years, especially during Visit Malaysia Year 2013-2014.

Malaysia ranks third, after Indonesia and China, for Singapore tourist arrivals.

Zalizam said 7.930 million tourist arrivals from Singapore were recorded between January and August last year, a drop of 7.5 per cent compared to the corresponding period in 2011.

He explained that the decrease was due to the change of the "Country of Residence" to "Country of Nationality" in the data registration/entry format by the Malaysian Immigration Department from January last year.

"Since more than 25 per cent of Singapore residents are expatriates or foreigners, their visits to Malaysia has been registered under their own respective countries.

"This new format will no longer require visitors to fill up the embarkation card, thus smoothening the process at the Malaysian CIQ (Customs, Immigration and Quarantine) complex and make the visit more interesting and enjoyable with less hassle," he said.

Zalizam also said that Malaysia and Singapore had been complementing each other in the tourism sector.

He said the opening of new products/attractions in Malaysia, such as the Johor Premium Outlet, Legoland, KidZania and Hello Kitty Town (Cartoon Character) at Puteri Harbour, offered a variety of choices to Singaporeans to spend their weekends and holidays in Malaysia.

DVD sellers make big bucks by mailing pirated consignments to Singaporeans

JOHOR BARU: DVD sellers are raking in thousands each month from Singaporeans who want their pirated DVDs to be delivered across the Causeway.

DVD sellers, especially at major shopping malls and hypermarkets in the city centre, have been providing the delivery service to Singaporeans for the last few years.

They are now using courier service to send the DVDs to avoid getting caught by the Malaysian and Singaporean authorities.

A DVD seller, who wants to be known as Tan, said his customers were mostly Singaporeans and he has been delivering their orders for the last five years.

He pointed out that, previously, he would send the DVDs directly to his customers in Singapore but now had to change his tactics due to stringent checks at the Causeway, as it is much safer and the risks of getting caught were minimum.

“If our Singaporean customers ordered more than 20 DVDs we would charge them about S$3 (RM7.50) per DVD and if they ordered more than 50 DVDs then it is about S$2.50 (RM6.25) per DVD on top of the normal RM5 for movies or RM8 for a television series.

“This is to cover the delivery cost and we would put the DVDs into a box filled up with polystyrene foam before sending it,” he said.

Another DVD seller, who wants to be known as Ramli, said that Singaporeans preferred buying the pirated DVDs here as it was cheap and the quality was good.

He added that the strict anti-piracy laws in the island republic also prompted many Singaporeans to cross the Causeway to buy DVDs in Johor.

“Pirated DVDs are not sold openly in Singapore unlike here which is why many Singaporeans prefer ordering from us,” he said.

Johor Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) director Ayub Abd Rahman said that the ministry's hands are tied as the DVD sellers are exporting it to another country.

“The ministry could only take action against sellers who displayed the pirated DVDs on shelves.

“However to tackle this problem, the ministry has set up a taskforce where it conducts surveillance and operations at known hotspots where such DVDs are sold,” he said.

Beware of new car jacking tactics in JB!
I know many bros like to send car to car wash then go cheong/MP

TACTIC USED..
1. thief drives car into car wash for wash
2. comes back after collecting keys to car after wash and says wrong key
3. EXCHANGES keys with washer (that's how they get your car keys)
4. drives away your car with your keys

Report from The STAR dated 26 January 2013 :-

Motorists who fail to pay outstanding summonses will be brought to court, says traffic police

JOHOR BARU: Traffic offenders, including motorists from Singapore, who fail to settle their outstanding summonses within a month from the date issued will be hauled to court.

The police issued the stern warning as many of them are taking it too lightly to settle the fines.

Johor Baru (South) traffic chief Deputy Supt Ooi Kok Seong said about 13,000 summonses were issued last year for various traffic offences within the Johor Baru district.

“Over the years the number of summonses have increased gradually but many of the traffic offenders have not settled their dues on time,” he told StarMetro.

He cited a previous case where a motorist was ordered by the court to settle her outstanding summonses for two years amounting to RM48,000.

“If payments are made within a month, motorists would get a discount between 30% and 50% depending on how fast they settle it,” he said adding that the police would not entertain those who wanted to settle their fines after the one month grace period was over.

He said upon the expiry of the one-month grace period, traffic offenders would have to face the court once the arrest warrants were issued, and the police would conduct arrest warrants operation to apprehend them.

DSP Ooi said the court then might order them to pay up to three times more than the original amount of the fine under Section 119 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for failure to pay traffic summonses.

He also said that there would not be any leniency or discounts for six traffic offences - illegal parking, accidents, beating red traffic lights, failure to use safety belts and helmets, and using hand phones while driving.

Heavy traffic expected at Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints from Feb 4, 2013

AsiaOne | Friday, Feb 1, 2013

SINGAPORE - Traffic volume at the Woodlands and Tuas land checkpoints is expected to be heavy throughout the Lunar New Year holidays, said the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA).

Traffic build-up is expected to start from Monday (Feb 4) and continue throughout the festive period till Tuesday (February 12). Travellers using the land checkpoints during these periods can expect delays. To avoid a surge of people and vehicles seeking clearance at the land checkpoints, travellers are advised to adjust their travel plans if possible. The ICA added that with enhanced security checks, traffic build-up is inevitable.

How to ease congestion

Drivers are encouraged to maintain lane discipline to ease congestion, and to car-pool or make use of public transport.

Singaporeans issued with the BioPass or registered with the National Registration Office, can use the enhanced Immigration Automated Clearance System (eIACS) lanes at the bus halls for immigration clearance.

Travellers are reminded to ensure that they are carrying their own passports before presenting themselves for immigration clearance at the checkpoints. The ICA has detected a number of cases where travellers presented the wrong passports for immigration clearance. This has affected clearance efficiency and caused inconvenience to other checkpoint users.

In addition, travellers should also make sure that they do not bring unlawful or prohibited goods into or out of Singapore. The list of controlled and prohibited items can be found on ICA’s website http://www.ica.gov.sg.

Traffic information available on EMAS

Travellers leaving Singapore by Woodlands or Tuas Checkpoints will be able to know in advance the traffic situation from LTA’s Expressway Monitoring & Advisory System (EMAS) installed along the AYE and BKE respectively.

Drivers may also call the traffic information hotline at 6863-0117, listen to TrafficWatch on the radio or visit LTA’s One Motoring website (http://www.onemotoring.com.sg) to check the latest traffic conditions at the land checkpoints.

New joint crime prevention effort by Johor and Singapore police

POLICE on both sides of the Causeway today jointly launched a series of five pamphlets in their first cross-border crime prevention initiative.

Targeting travellers from Singapore and Malaysia, the brochures contain police contact numbers, and safety tips to ward off theft, violent property crime, outrage of modesty and cheating scams. The fifth is a guide on prohibited items in Singapore. The initiative is spearheaded by the Jurong Police Division and the Johor Police Contingent.

"Now with the rise of Iskandar, we see an extra need to intensify our efforts, especially from the commercial standpoint. This is in anticipation of investors," said Datuk Ismail bin Yatim, Johor's deputy chief police officer, in a speech delivered at Aeon Bukit Indah Shopping Centre, Johor Baru.

From today, the pamphlets - in English and Malay - will be distributed at the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints. There are also plans to roll them out to tourist hotspots around Johor.

Report from The STAR dated 20 March 2013 :-

JB people like working with the police in fighting crime

JOHOR BARU: The public is happy they have a role in community policing programmes, which includes fighting crime.

The success of this collaboration with the police is reflected in the 26.7% drop in crime incidents between 2009 and last year in Johor, one of the states identified in the NKRA for reducing crime under the Government Transformation Programme (GTP).

State deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Ismail Yatim said the community policing initiative had become an integrated part of the police efforts to reduce crime, adding that there were 268 community policing programmes in Johor.

He said criminal cases dropped from 20,970 in 2011 to 19,068 last year. The drop of more than 9.07% in the crime rate was more than the target set under the NKRA, he added.

“When we compare last year’s total cases to the 26,035 cases reported in 2009, we see a drop of about 26.7% in crime activities,” he said, adding that community policing was part of 30 initiatives by the Johor police to help reduce crime rates.

Bukit Indah community policing chairman Yap Keng Tak said many people now realised the importance of forging close ties with the police in reducing crime.

“We had only five members when our community policing started on June 26, 2009, but we now have more than 1,200 members,” he said, adding that the people had noticed a drop in crime cases since the GTP was launched that year.

“Residents were scared to walk out of their homes because of rampant snatch theft and robbery cases. That has all changed now.”

Clerk dies after being clubbed on back of head by snatch thief in Johor

40-year-old clerk Tar Bee Lin slipped into a coma and passed away after taking a blow to the back of the head from a snatch thief on May 23.

According to an article in The Star, she had been walking alone to a bus stop near her home in Taman Centyry at around 8am when a man on a motorcycle approached her from behind.

The snatch thief then hit her on the back of the head with a blunt object, causing her to fall onto the side of the road, before grabbing Tar's backpack containing her laptop, house keys and some clothes.

Concerned passers-by who noticed Tar lying on the ground quickly alerted the police, and an ambulance later rushed her to Hospital Sultanah Aminah for emergency treatment.

Tar's sister, who declined to be named, said that her sister slipped into a coma at around noon that day and passed away on Sunday night.

”She was supposed to return to Paloh to celebrate Vesak Day with our family members after work that day,” she said.

Singaporean assaulted by staff after trying to order thosai

JOHOR BARU: A craving for his regular thosai turned ugly for a 51-year-old Singaporean when he was assaulted by a waiter who had refused to take his order earlier.

Instead of fulfilling his appetite, N. Chandran ended up getting bruises on his face and neck following the brawl with the waiter outside the restaurant near Jalan Ungku Puan here.

Recalling Tuesday’s incident, Chandran, who works as a crane operator in the republic, said that he went to his favourite restaurant for lunch alone at about 12.10pm.

“When I reached the restaurant, I went straight into the kitchen and enquired with one of the helpers whether thosai was available for lunch.

“The helper said yes, suggesting that I make my order at the counter,” he said.

Chandran, a regular at the restaurant for the past four years, then approached a restaurant staff, who was manning the apom counter, and placed an order for thosai.

“However, I was told that there was no more thosai.

“I asked him to check with the kitchen before refusing to take my order.

“Instead, he (the apom maker) told me to leave the restaurant,” Chandran said, adding that the staff got angry when he questioned him, leading to him being pulled and punched in the face.

Chandran said although the restaurant was packed, no one came to his aid, not even the manager.

The manager, when asked yesterday about the incident, said thosai had been sold out by noon that day.

“However, he (Chandran) started creating a ruckus and began hurling vulgarities at my staff at the apom counter,” he claimed.

He said Chandran also toppled one of the apom woks, prompting the fight.

A police official from the Johor Baru South police station confirmed that a report had been lodged and that investigations were being conducted.

When she went to Johor Baru to collect her medication on Tuesday morning, Madam Rajeswary Kartigeyan (above) expected it to be another routine trip across the Causeway.

But to her horror, the 64-year-old Malaysian, who lives with her youngest son in Singapore, found herself in a harrowing two-hour nightmare.

Madam Rajeswary said she was abducted by at least three people outside Sultanah Aminah Hospital.

She was bundled into the back seat of a car, bound, blindfolded and gagged with tape, and told she would be “murdered” if she did not comply with their demands.

They then robbed her of her money and valuables, and dumped her at an oil palm plantation.

Worried Singaporeans give Malaysian holiday plans a miss

Singaporeans, alarmed at the recent spate of shooting cases all around Malaysia, have gone on to alter their travel plans, with some postponing their trips, fearing for their lives.

In the past fornight, at least 13 such incidents were reported, including the high-profile case of Arab-Malaysian Development Bank founder Hussain Ahmad Najadi, who was gunned down on July 29 at a carpark in Kuala Lumpur.

Today Online reported that Singaporean Lim Jiuan, 53, cancelled her trip to Malaysia following the shooting incidents. She and her family had planned to spend the long Hari Raya weekend at the Berjaya Hills resort near Genting Highlands.

“In the past week, there have been many cases of violence, so we decided not to go, and to remain in Singapore,” she said.

A group of eight friends, including 32-year-old businessman Roy Soh, changed their plans of driving up to Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday night. They left on Thursday morning instead.

“We wanted to beat the traffic jams, but a few of us were quite worried about safety issues driving through the night. We felt that it’s better to take breaks at rest-stops during the day, rather than at night.”

Singaporeans who were already holidaying in Malaysia were also concerned about their safety, the online portal reported.

Lynette Wong, 26, who is in Kuala Lumpur, said she and her 11 friends continued with their holiday plans even though their parents had advised them against it, as they were in need of a break.

She, however, said the capital city "looks as per normal so far". But she noted that the three shooting cases in Penang two days ago was a cause for concern, adding that the group will stay together and not attract unnecessary attention to themselves.

Despite the concerns, many Singaporeans continued with their travel into Malaysia - as seen by the massive traffic jams which started on Wednesday night and went on until Thursday afternoon - showing that the recent cases were targeted attacks.

As part of their annual Hari Raya ritual, Salamon Sungip, 58, and his family left for Batu Pahat yesterday, pointing out that “killings happen everywhere, so no difference”.

Ilyas Selamat - a 26-year-old engineer - said he continued to drive into Johor Baru to fill up on petrol twice a week as the shootings “do not involve regular civilians”.

Singaporeans play it safe amid spate of crime in Malaysia

A recent spate of violent crimes in Malaysia has not put Singaporeans off going there. However, many are playing it safe, The Straits Times has found.

At least 24 people have been killed and 21 injured since April in shootings and robberies in areas including Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Perak, Johor and Negeri Sembilan.

Miss Candice Lim, a management trainee based in Kuala Lumpur, never leaves her house without a pepper spray.

She also uses the MyTeksi application on her phone to book taxis, which allows her friends and family to track her ride.

Safety travel tips for Malaysia
•Don't walk around alone. Always try to be accompanied.
•Don't carry handbags or cash with you unless necessary.
•Carry any bags in front of you and cover them. Do not sling them on the side.
•Be alert of your surroundings and look out for suspicious people.
•Lock car doors whenever possible, even when pumping petrol.
•Don't change a large sum of money and count it in public. Change money in Singapore if possible.

S'porean couple live in fear after JB smash-and-grab

A smash-and-grab incident in Johor Baru has not only left a Singaporean couple in shock, but also in fear that they might no longer be safe in their own home.

Ms Fie, 41, a property agent, and her husband, who wanted to be known only as Mr Muka, 42, were in their car in Johor Baru when two men on a motorcycle smashed the front passenger side window and snatched a handbag containing Ms Fie’s identity card and the keys to their Bukit Batok flat.

The couple are now traumatised and fear the thieves could come to their home in Singapore. They have since sent their children to live with relatives.

Two Malaysians speaking to The New Paper advise Singaporeans to keep a look-out for motorcyclists, as many crimes in Malaysia are committed by crooks on motorbikes.

My friend sent us this information. Though we can't verify it, it's a warning to take note as many of us drive in to JB for makan and provision.

Travelling is a wonderful experience when you want to get away from the humdrum daily routine.. It's just that the natives there can make it troublesome. Even if you take along the correct passport.

DON'T "DUIT KOPI" or BRIBE THE POLICE OR JPJ AND FALL INTO THEIR TRAP FROM NOW ON !!!To:

Friends, Heed the warning. Don't offer bribe to the police cos they get more than what you would give and you get into worst trouble..... WARNING : DON'T OFFER DUIT KOPI FROM NOW ON! DEAR FRIENDS If you have ever paid or are thinking of paying ' Coffee Money' when stopped for traffic or other offences, DON'T EVER Do This Again.

The traffic department (JPJ) has recently started a campaign to be rid of corruption. Every Officer on duty will be rewarded with RM100.00 if they report each case of bribery to the department.

This is how they do (trick you into) it. They will note down the details of your IC/MyKad, and ask you how you want to settle ( 'Macam mana nak selesai?')

If you indicate yes or even offer to give them any money, they will report the incident by rejecting your 'Kopi Money' and get the RM100.00 instead as an incentive for their integrity and 'Honest' pubicity.

This means that You will end up having a summon issued to you and perhaps a charge for bribery. SO DON'T PAY DUIT KOPI AGAIN, especially if you hope to go free with a lesser amount of money compared to the fine. Even if you want to pay over RM200, the JPJ Officers would rather have a 'good' name than to take your kopi money.

Just beware of their trick because the cops are now accumulating 'cookies' points for their promotion and pay increment - with your help if possible. They should have done this to stop corruption long time ago... But anyway it's better late than never, right?
SPREAD THIS MESSAGE TO WARN AND EDUCATE OTHERS ON THIS NEW ANTI-RASUAH POLICY! AND BEWARE - DON'T EVER FALL INTO THEIR TRAP TO OFFER A BRIBE TO ANY JPJ OR EVEN POLICE OFFICERS AGAIN!

i think once being stop, better turn on the "recorder".
they trick you, when you try to settle, they catch you.

BUT, what is the proof? they got recorder?
If not, they can also anyhow say you bride them, right?
((since they report you, they got point))
because the court will "believe" the officer, even you go for court case. right?

anyone want to share some experience?

Four-hour ride of terror in Johor Barufor S'porean couple

The Singaporean couple were refuelling their car near the Plaza Pelangi shopping mall in Johor Baru for the trip home at about 11.15pm on Saturday.

But the Lims were suddenly approached by two men in their 30s, one of whom had a knife. They said Mr Lim owed them RM65,000 (S$25,600) and recognised him through his vehicle’s licence plate number.

The couple had travelled to Johor Baru more than 40 times in the past two years and had never encountered anyone making such a claim.

Fearing for their safety, Mr Lim sped off towards the immigration checkpoint. The two men caught up with the couple in their white lorry.

Then followed four nerve-racking hours driving around the city from one ATM to another to draw money to pay the men.

The two men took off with RM6,000 and the couple's mobile phones.

Four-hour ride of terror in Johor Barufor S'porean couple

I was staying at Taman Pelangi during my visit to JB this year and was travelling alone. Luckily nothing happened to me that time.

I think need to reconsider my decision of staying at the same area again during my next year visit as that area is famous for crime.

Report from The New Paper (Singapore) dated 2 November 2013 :-

Tips from Singapore and Johor Police
By Ng Jun Sen and Matthaeus Choo

A Singaporean couple was robbed in JB at a petrol station right next to the Johor police HQ. They had called the JB police to come assist them, but no help arrived even after 15 minutes of stalling for time with the robbers.
Here are some tips from the Singapore and JB police:

- Never take shortcuts through dark, deserted places. Keep to well-lit areas with people and traffic.

- Pack your belongings in inconspicuous bags. Expensive bags can draw unnecessary attention.

- Clean out your wallet or purse before you go. take only essential credit cards. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

- Don't display expensive jewellery, cameras and other items that might draw attention.

- Don't be distracted by strangers creating a commotion or accidentally spilling something onto you.

- Carry your purse close to your body. Carry your wallet in your front pocket.

- Park your vehicle in well-lit areas and in parking spaces where there is security.

- Use additional security equipment such as steering wheel locks, clutch and brake locks, disc locks, gear locks and audible alarm systems to secure your vehicle. Johor police hotline: 07-221-2999

Pay up or face the music, errant S’pore drivers warned

JOHOR BARU: Police are on the lookout for errant Singaporean drivers with outstanding summonses under the Ops Cantas Khas Trafik.

State police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said 10 warrants had been issued so far against such drivers from the republic.

He said Singapore police would also be notified to help with the search.

“We will use all means to track them down. We will also be setting up roadblocks along highways, major trunk roads and at the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex (CIQ),” he told reporters after opening the state level crime awareness day at Tesco Tebrau here yesterday.

He also warned Singaporean drivers who had received traffic summonses over the years to pay their fines or be prepared to face the music.

Since Ops Cantas Khas Trafik was launched in the state on Nov 25, police have collected almost RM150,000 in fines from traffic offenders.

“We will continue to conduct operations to find errant drivers and suspected criminals,” he said.

ALL Singaporeans who fill up petrol in their cars in JB/Malaysia, please read the following WARNING :-

Report from The New Paper (Singapore ) dated 27 January 2014 :-

Mechanics say tilting car to fill more petrol can be dangerous

A photo of a man filling up his tilted Singapore-registered car at a petrol station in Johor Baru has gone viral in online forums on both sides of the Causeway.

The picture, initially posted and edited on a Malaysian forum, had captions in Chinese describing the man as "silly" and a "cheapskate" for jacking up the rear of his car just to get a few extra dollars' worth of petrol.

The photo on citizen journalism website Stomp has more than 46,000 views and almost 100 comments.

Netizens in Singapore forums mocked his unorthodox method, with some saying they were embarrassed with his actions while others defended him, saying he had done nothing wrong.

Car mechanics told The New Paper that his method would not increase the intake of petrol into his car.

One of them, Mr Hanafi Othman, 32, said he has never seen it in his 12 years in the industry and described it as "quite crazy".

"Jacking up the car would not make any difference," he said.

"Maybe the idea was to let the air escape from the petrol tank to create more space, but I doubt there would be any noticeable difference.

"If he fills up the tank to the brim before removing the jack to lower his car, some petrol might spill out, which could be dangerous."

Another mechanic, who wanted to be known only as Mr S.H., has seen this method before but agrees that it might do more harm than good.

The mechanic, who is in his 40s and has six years of experience, said: "Filling up this way might cause uneven weight distribution to the car and loosen screws and bolts underneath the car.

"The method does not work at all."

TNP had in the past reported on other Singaporeans jacking their vehicles in attempts to get their money's worth at petrol stations across the Causeway.

Drivers were seen filling up after tilting their car with a wooden ramp. To gain a further saving of just over $1, these drivers even filled their tanks to the brim, putting themselves at risk.

Mova Automotive service adviser Luqman Nurhakim, 29, said: "Filling fuel tanks to the brim might cause the petrol to flow out and pose potential danger. It is best not to overfill."

Myths
Other fuel-efficiency myths that car mechanics have heard of include rocking the vehicle while pumping petrol and filling up in the morning when underground petrol storage tanks are cooler, thus producing denser petrol.

Both methods, however, are either myths or produce minimal increments in the amount.

Mr Luqman said: "Rocking the vehicle till the tank overflows and filling the tank to the brim again afterwards or jacking the car up can squeeze in only about 1 litre more of petrol.

"Petrol storage tanks are very insulated so there won't be any huge temperature differences no matter the time of day," Mr Luqman said.

"A definite way to save money on petrol would be to take care of the vehicle's engine, cutting down on excessive braking and sending the vehicle for regular maintenance."

Johor 'safe beyond doubt', says its police chief

The police chief of Johor has declared his state to be "safe beyond doubt".

Referring to negative perceptions of the crime situation in Johor and recent crime statistics, Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said that the state's police are in "full control", reports The Straits Times.

Datuk Mohd Mokhtar noted that the number of violent and property crime cases in Johor fell about 36 per cent between 2008 and last year. Overall, there were 17,105 crime cases in the state last year, or about 10 per cent less than in 2012.

The police chief also assured Singaporeans that they are not specifically targeted by criminals: "Crimes are committed when an opportunity arises regardless of (a victim's) race, religion, sex and nationality."

Of the 17 million Singaporean tourists in Johor last year, he noted that only 397 of them were victims of crime.

Besides enforcement by Johor police, Datuk Mohd Mokhtar advised that visitors also have to be responsible for themselves and take their own precautions against crime.

Samsters, do you believe what this police chief said?

Latest news reported that spore side has announced that the toll charge will increase from $1.20 to $6.50 = rm16.50 to match with msia side of toll rm16.50 on the 1st October 2014.

That means any car (regardless spore or msia registered) will have to pay the toll fee of rm33 in total excluding VEP charges on a return journey. This is in fact a wise move by both govt to control the traffic condition at the causeway.

Since spore on 1st august has raised the VEP fee for msia car from $20 to $35 = rm90, msia side should consider to implement VEP for spore car at the fee of rm90 instead of rm50 suggested earlier so that the VEP fee could match for both countries. It is important to equalise the toll and vep fees on both sides.

At present there may be some spore cars travel to other parts of msia for many days or weeks thus contributing to the traffic congestion of that areas.

Msia should also follow what spore is doing to charge the vep fee on spore cars on a per day basis and not per entry basis. This will regulate, control and reduce the number of spore cars entering into JB and other parts of msia.

As a result of less spore car entering msia, not only the causeway will be less congested, even in JB, melaka, KL roads will be less jam as well. :D

Spore side is charging VEP for msia motorbike at $4=rm10. Msia side should also do the same and charge spore motorbike at rm 10 per day to match the fee on both side. Hope msia side do not wait till end of year to implement the vep but to implement as soon as possible so that traffic at jb town and causeway can be improved. :p

Actually among all the vehicles crossing the causeway, cars and motorbike make up the majority. if the numbers of both of these vehicles are reduced, then travelling across the causeway will be a breeze for the benefit of all commuters... :)

Bro rav.evc, probably you should look at a bigger picture and consider the interest of johorian as a whole and not just the minority retailers.

When less sporean comes to jb to spend means less money will be pumped into the economy of jb. Then cost of living will then be reduced to an affordable level for the local people. It has been a fact that Johorian who work in jb suffered because of the high cost of living standard. Their buying power or wealth are not as great as their counterparts who work in spore.

For your info, jb is the most costly city to stay with the highest cost of living in msia above KL. Therefore please also spare a thought for the majority local johorian people and not just those minority of msian who work in spore.

As you know that the property market in jb has been speculated by sporean & foreigner. The effect of these has caused the property price in jb to increase at least 3 folds for the past 7 years, why i know because i have been monitoring the property market since then.

The negative result of these property boom is that many of the local people (who works in jb) be it newly married couple, etc could not afford an average landed property in jb which could easily cost 600k and above compared to about rm200k just few years ago.

I have many friends who are real johorian (土生土长) who reside in jb and they always hoped that one day the cost of living and property price in jb can return to the level back during the last decade which is in the early 2000s. This can only be achieved if foreign investments are greatly reduced.

There is always alternative way of travelling beside using motorbike as a mode of transport. Public buses, taxis and mrt is abundant. In fact human should always look towards a greener environment by reducing pollution and waste. That's why many countries always encourage their citizens to use public transport instead.

Furthermore, now the msia govt is looking into arranging many shuttle bus services for johorian to commute between the two countries. There will be many pick-up points in jb for convenience.

They are also looking into the feasibility of getting KTM train to provide short travel service across the causeway between the CIQ and woodland train station in order to reduce the traffic.

In addition, the msia govt are also considering to build a proper pedestrian walkway for the people to walk across the causeway all the way to the CIQ complex. :)

as per the link from LTA at the bottom of my post, if both Malaysia and Singapore want to practise equal treatment/charges then the proposed VEP for SG cars entering MY should only be applicable for certain timings as per stipulated by LTA.

On top of that SG cars should also have 10 VEP free days per calendar year which are being accorded to MY vehicles at the moment.

If that's the case the jam might still be there because from 5PM onwards which is the peak hour the VEP is not applicable.

Seriously I guess they would just keep changing and changing until don't know when or what desired outcome only then would they stop.

Ultimately it's the commoners who's just trying to make a living traveling from MY to SG and the SG ppl who's traveling to MY in order to save on some daily expenses that suffer...

Lowering property prices & cost of living is a move backwards.
More people investing & visiting JB increases investments.
so what if you reduce property prices back to year 2000 when a Double Storey Terrace costs RM300k when the people only earn RM3000 a month. Can they finance their mortgage?
What should be looked at is higher income or salary. Better quality workforce to increase the service standards. Then you can demand higher prices & better income.
NO ONE complains about the cost of living in most cities if the balance between income & costs of living is met.
The current government should reduce taxation on most fronts.
Its the mismanagement of the government that is the main cause.
If no foreign investments do you think the disposable income of msians would increase living standards? Its the weak Msian Currency thats the main cause.
Malaysia's Income cap is at rm1200 (increased from rm900).
Thats less than USD 400.
What do you think you can get with that?
You need to purchase materials from other countries as Msia doesnt produce everything. Even the petrol we produce is jet quality but our government is complaining on subsidies. WTF is this? Msian cars produced here are more expensive than the selling price overseas. Where's the logic when you tax all the way from the income of the workers till its sold in Msia?
Being expensive is ok but it has to equad to quality received.
Look at the security in Msia? Its a shock there are still tourists.
If you depend on other sources of economy, where does Msia stand? We dont have enough skilled workers..if there was their attitude sucks. In costs, it cant be cheaper than in china. Even assembly of cars, brands choose thailand. They claim to control many rulings as an islamic country but are they really one?

By the way, i am a Malaysian sick of this country's governance & administration.

Increasing toll costs is the easiest way to attain quick and non investment income.
Why dont they do this in the context of reducing traffic?
Why does all solutions has to have the people suffering?
Thats coz they are not too bright & plain lazy.
Why not.....
Increase the immigration counters?
Improve on speed in customs checking?
Have special access for people who enter & leave Spore frequently like in the northern immigration?
Widen the causeway?
All i mention needs costs.

just merely increasing toll prices is a no brainer way of a ssolution.knowing their intentions & capabilities, they just want to make a quick buck.
just calculate, if the current implementation of an increased toll charges just lasts for 6 months, how much additional income is there for both countries?
When economy is bad and their segment of people are the ones suffering they would make a quick U-Turn.
then where goes the increased toll fees they collected these few months?
This Msian Government is just too Predictable...

This country has no future.

Bro, good comments.

However, I do agree with you to a certain extent.

There are in fact many talented and rich people has moved out of msia. One example is Robert kuok, the richest man in msia aka sugar king of asia who grew up in johor bahru has moved most of his business out of msia, including selling away his property company pelangi berhad few years ago.

As you mentioned that the average msian income cap is at rm1200, I doubt the msian working in msia can have a good increase in their salary because firstly investors are attracted to invest in msia due to its cheaper labour cost than other developed countries and secondly the quality of products and services level have not attained world class standard yet. Msia also failed to attact enough large foreign multi national corporations to provide high income for the working rakyat.

Msia has a vision that in year 2020, msia will achieve "first world country" status. However one of my msian friend jokingly said that unless you put another "0" behind year 2020 or else there is no way it can obtain that status.

Since msian in the near future will not be able to have their income raised to a level like in spore, then in order for the local people to live a normal live, the property prices must then be low and affordable and cost of living should also be low to tally/match with their income.

When a country is moving backwards does not imply that it is completely bad too. :p

At least you will still have a affordable and suitable retirement place to stay should you decide not to work anymore.

I am not trying to promote msia but just like to share on these facts. In life, the most important things are house and car. Unfortunately these two things are really much more expensive in spore than in msia.

One house in spore can buy almost 20 houses in msia of the same size and build quality

One car in spore can equate to 3-4 cars of the same make/model in msia.

One litre of petrol in spore can buy 3 litres of petrol in msia. (among all the south east asian countries, msia petrol is the cheapest as it also produce crude oil from the underground)

Look at spore high cost of living, senior citizens in their 70s or 80s will still have to work to make ends meet.

On the other hand, an average msian normally are able to retire at the age between 50-55 comfortably, like some of my msian friends who have worked in spore in their younger days are able to retire in their 40s because their expenses are really low compared to the hugh savings they had.

One thing i stronger agree with you is the lack of skill worker. example when a building has been erected, they lack the expertise to maintain it, and after sometime it became very run down.

However they are always pros and cons living in a country of your preference. Important is that the pros outweigh the cons. :)

Spore increase their vep is not to generate revenue but seek to equalise the cost of owning and using a msia-registered car in spore, with a spore-registered car. :D

Msia need to implement vep for spore cars to generate income to sustain and maintain their infrastructure as they do not have erp, coe, gst as revenue. Their road tax are also cheap.

Spore increase their toll fees because spore has a long-standing policy of matching their toll charges to those set by msia, and that msia is aware of this policy. :p

Msia need to charge toll because it needed the funds to maintain the CIQ facilities & roads as well as the Eastern Dispersal Link Highway. :)

Bros,

i only Tom, Dick on the street. i try my view ar...

Only Gov can make Johorean life better with policies. If they curb foreigner fly the property price early, then local have a cheaper house to buy lor... Now already up lor... no choice lor..

And also Gov long ago should make $ from the visitors. Don't let the bizman make $ and skip the tax.
The retailer or shop owner or bizman earn a lots when all these Sporean spend here, but Gov don't know how to tap the income from them. (tap from visitors & bizman who earn from these visitors but not from the own people)
By increase those "fees" just make the local more suffer only. Visitors where got feel pain? they come once a week only. Few RM toll fees is nothing.
BUT for those local, daily got to pay now... who suffer more?

Look at the other side, they so smart to tap from visitors, so i hope the Msia Gov also learn it. (So far most policies make local more suffer)

1Million property for foreigner buy is a way, but buyer no fool lor.
they no buy or wait lor... see who can tahan?
(must invite them come first, at the same time must make sure Gov get gain from what they spend here)
(many run tax although they have earn a lot from visitors - This is one of the reason why Gov have no $!)
(When Gov no $ and they don't know how to make from outsider.....???

Bros,

i only Tom, Dick on the street. i try my view ar...

(When Gov no $ and they don't know how to make from outsider.....???
this is where Msia are now...)

It is rather late for msia govt to step in to control property price in the market by implementing the new rule that foreigners wil have to buy property that costs more than 1 million effective 1 January 2014.

That means to say that there are still many left over properties in iskandar built in year 2013 and earlier which have not been sold and all these properties only have the minimum property price requirement of 500k which foreigner are still eligible to buy.

In fact you may be surprise to know that many of the shop owners in shopping centres like pelangi, KSL, city square are sporeans owners.

Kuok group of companies (berinda properties) has sold City Square Shopping Centre to spore investment company. That is why you see many spore brand shops there and similiarly the retailers are mostly sporeans.

So if sporean don't go in to spend, the shop owners may either downsized their shops or worst scenario, close shop.

Sometimes as you happen to pass by those property exhibitions in shopping centres, the sales person will keep pestering you to buy johor properties saying that iskandar properties will give good return of your investment if you rent out to people.

I totally disagree with them base on the following reasons:

1) JB is not a "global" city like KL or Spore, therefore there is not many expatriates or foreign professional working in JB. As a result it is rather difficult to rent out the property.

2) Since JB properties are in fact oversupply, it may not be easy to constantly rent out the property unit all the time. For example when the rental lease of your unit is expiring you can't be 100% sure that you will definitely get a tenant to stay again continously. If it is left vacant for a long period of time, then there will be no return on investment.

3) Not many local people or msian will rent JB properties as most of them have at least a budget house 廉价屋 or normal house of their own.

4) We all know that the property price in johor has increased to its peak already which means that now is the worst time to buy as property price may fall very badly.

5) Minimum purchase of one million ringgit property and high stamp duty fee and levy.

6) Spore Toll hike $1.20 to $6.50

7) Msia Toll hike rm 2.90 to rm 16.50

8) Implement of VEP for spore cars rm50 or maybe more

9) Constant depreciation of ringgit.

10) High BLR loan rate compared to spore.

11) Prime location like larkin areas are normally 99 years not freehold.

Therefore it will be a great loss to any investors who can't rent out and sell the property.

Buying property in JB is easy as there are many options to choose as it is a buyer's market.

However selling property in JB is difficult, as it may take years or even more to sell a property because if the seller quoted too high, the buyers can always look for many other units. The seller will be at the losing end.

The above is only about investment of property for rental. However if you purchase property for your own stay then it is different again.

Some msian felt that the msia govt should not implement the GST tax next year as many msian will be affected. But instead should study and to explore more ways to attract foreign business investment into msia to create more jobs, increase the income of the people. In addition, imposing tax on all these companies can help generate revenue for the country.

At the same time efforts have to be carried out (like providing subsidies) to keep inflation low so that the people are able to keep pace with the cost of living. :)

Yeah, let those greedy loss badly as their condo and house bought can not have rental income.
and local not affort to buy coz too expensive for local.
:D

anyway, wish the same, pls don't add more salt to those "not so rich" biker.

for those property investor, toll fees is nothing to them. But for those daily workers, especially those biker, every dollar saved means a lot.

those driver think toll fees very high, PLS TRY..... USE BIKE lar... :D

Report from The STAR (Malaysia) dated 24 September 2014 :-

JB SMEs hit by new toll rates

JOHOR BARU: It has only been over a month since Malaysia introduced the new toll rates and businesses are starting to feel the pinch.

Malaysian Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) association chairman Teh Kee Sin said there had been complaints from members that they had suffered a 20% to 30% drop in business, mainly in the logistics, advertising, entertainment, retail sectors and those involved in the hairstyling business.

“The full extent of the situation will be known after Singapore also increases its toll rates beginning Oct 1,” he said, adding that this would have a snowball effect on all businesses in Johor.

He added that the SMEs were appealing to leaders in Singapore and Malaysia to sit down and resolve this issue.

“The impact is already being felt. I used to charter private cars to and from Changi airport, which cost me RM200. Now the price has doubled,” Teh told reporters at a press conference here yesterday.

He added that the association was collecting signatures and would be sending a letter to the leaders, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Mohamed Khaled, to look into this issue.

He added that besides SMEs, the toll hikes would also affect the middle income group and those working in Singapore.

“We are against any barriers that will impede the movement of people and goods between both countries,” Teh said, adding that the hikes would also hurt the country’s business competitiveness as the increased prices would be passed on to consumers.

Businessman K. Nakanathan, 54, who has eight outlets selling spices in hypermarkets and wet markets, has recorded a drop of at least 50% in Singaporean customers.

“My customers used to come at least four times a month. Now they come only once,” he said.

Tee Yen Chong, who is involved in the forwarding business, said that the cost of sending goods between the countries had increased by about 30%.

“Transport charges for lorries plying the Johor Baru and Singapore routes have increased from RM500 to about RM630. We expect it to go up by another RM50 when Singapore starts imposing new charges on Oct 1,” he added.

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced its new toll rates after Malaysia imposed its new toll rates at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex in Bangunan Sultan Iskandar on Aug 1.

The rates are RM9.70 and RM6.80 for inbound and outbound cars respectively. Singapore’s new toll rate for cars will see an increase from S$1.20 to S$3.80 (RM3.03 to RM9.62).

Think my question is relevant to this thread.

Have a rare chance to travel to JB to relax and try out their spa for the first time but just when I thought my planning was ok, I took out my passport and realised the 6 month validity has just passed a few days.

So basically, my passport is valid for a little less than 6 months which I think is not very safe to go.

Or am I wrong in this case?

Since I am going just for a day trip, is it safe to take the risk?

The 6 months ruling still applies but it is their discretion whether to close one eye if lapse by a few days. Balance remainder of 2 months is definitely kenna u-turn.

Last december my company organised an outing to malacca for staff n family. One of my colleague's husband had only 5 1/2 months remaining validity on his passport. At the JB checkpoint he was denied entry and was led to put on board a bus returning to Singapore. He was not even have a chance to talk to his wife. Just 2 weeks short of the requirement and they deny him entry. Worse still was the fact that he is an officer in the singapore police force which even the malaysian side not give a damn.

I just receive confirmation from source working in ICA that the singapore side will stop you from travelling if your passport has less than 90 days validity.

Thanks bro for the story.

I have read contradicting stories where some malaysian officers allow to pass but some won't.

I decided to play safe and postpone my trip there until I get my passport renewed.

Worse still was the fact that he is an officer in the singapore police force which even the malaysian side not give a damn.

Actually many in the RMP do not like their counterparts from SGP...... whom are often not respectful to these RMP policemen and often "talk down" to them.

So if you are a Singapore police....... please do not identify yourself as a policeman if you ever get into any trouble here.... our local polis will make sure they go by the book and proceed accordingly..... no compromise or settlement for you.

There are some Malaysians who join the SPF..... after a few years there they resign and come back to join the Malaysian Police. And they are appointed as Inspectors /ASPs because of their "experience" whereas their previous ranks in the SPF was only as Corporals or Sergeants.

This is proof that our Singapore Police is of higher standard than their Malaysian Police counterparts if our NCOs can easily become their senior officers by just by crossing over.

Does not matter whether is real facts or fake news...... what matters is the "official" storyline.
If the gahmen says the sun rises in the west..... then that is to be officially accepted as fact and all of you must believe that the sun rises in the west..... even though the truth and facts show otherwise.

Unless you are prepared to do a Pakatan ala Najip.... you have no choice but to accept the "official" line as the truth.

New government is about against corruption. Even websites like wishct has been shut down. Sources told me there will be a massive crackdown with raids.
Better don't visit during puasa month. Else kena media attention for the wrong reasons. You have been warned.
